The liar-in-chief wants to take credit for the great job federal officials are doing to help people recover from Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in Texas and Florida, but what if there wasn’t a need for a huge recovery effort in the first place?
The Trump regime has adopted the Republican public stance that global warming is a vast liberal conspiracy concocted by leading scientists in an effort to destroy the poor, beleaguered oil and gas industry and to financially ruin its millionaire and billionaire barons. The appointment of science-denier Scott Pruitt as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, who is shredding regulations to help out his oil buddies, was a decision that has imperiled the planet.
If Pruitt gets even four years to dismantle the EPA, it will probably be too late to stop major impacts of global warming.
To deny the scientific method is a grave error. In the case of global warming, it’s a death wish. The impact of global warming is all around us from stronger hurricanes to massive flooding to immense wildfires to melting arctic ice to killing heat waves to droughts. All of us in this country are paying the cost of manmade carbon emissions as the federal government bails out Houston and the state of Florida. All of us are paying for the lack of appropriate government regulations.
So instead of somber analysis and discussion of the impact of global warming and our carbon footprint, we get self-congratulatory tweets from the Trump regime. It’s a vicious cycle. At some point, as scientists warn, it will all come crashing down as exponentially one severe weather crisis after another increase in intensity and frequency.
In a CNN interview before Hurricane Irma hit, Pruitt said, “To have any kind of focus on the cause and effect of the storm versus helping people, or actually facing the effect of the storm, is misplaced. To use time and effort to address it at this point is very, very insensitive to this people in Florida.” Note, the repetition of “very, very” as if that drives the point home.
As usual, Pruitt and his GOP colleagues get it exactly wrong. It’s “insensitive” to not talk about global warming right now. If you were a victim of a crime, you would certainly want to know who committed it right away. FEMA is not going to deny people a bottle of water or a bed or any other sort of assistance just because people are discussing global warming.
It’s easy to lose focus as the horrors of the Trump regime unfold, but global warming is something that no longer can be ignored. Scientists should drop any reticence to speak the truth. The impacts are mounting throughout the world. It’s not hyperbole to argue the planet faces a mass extinction within 100 years. It won’t matter then if a righteous group of people can say, “See, I told you so.” Everyone will be on the brink of death.
The clown Trump and his cabinet of millionaires put in power, at least partially by white supremacists and a hostile foreign government, have come to symbolize the folly and greed of humankind. The science tells us global warming is retribution.
