Since the Democratic Party leadership refuses to call for Donald Trump’s impeachment despite the exposure of massive corruption in his regime maybe it can get in front of Robert Mueller’s Russian-collusion investigation and call for perjury charges against Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Don’t count on it. Republicans own all three branches of the federal government right now and two-thirds of the country’s legislatures, but Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer still seem to want to play to play it safe and deploy the tepid, centrist game plan that got the country into this mess in the first place.
By now it’s obviously clear that Sessions lied under oath when he testified before a Senate committee that he didn’t know of any type collusion between Russian operatives and the Trump campaign/regime. The guilty plea of Trump advisor George Papadopoulos for lying to federal officials has proven that beyond any doubt. As The Intercept’s Marcy Wheeler writes:
. . . Papadopoulos plea shows that Sessions — then acting as Trump’s top foreign policy adviser — was in a March 31, 2016, meeting with Trump, at which Papadopoulos explained “he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin.”
As Wheeler points out, . . . Sessions has repeatedly testified to the Senate that he knows nothing about any collusion with the Russians.”
The fact that Papadopoulus was actually an operative for the Kremlin on a direct level, with Sessions’ obvious full knowledge, means the Attorney General is not only a liar but an extremely reckless one at that. It means he’s willing to risk his entire career and reputation for a tyrant racist, who has his own lying problem. It also means that Trump himself, at the very least, knew of the collusion efforts, although Trump’s pathetic denials and his consistent lies about the issue have not been under oath.
Papadopoulos’s plea was made public Monday, along with the tax fraud and money laundering charges against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and campaign official Rick Gates, who face lengthy jail sentences in a case that epitomizes the greed and corruption with which Trump has surrounded himself throughout his working life. Manafort and Trump share a lot in common.
The Perez-Pelosi camp could also demand, again, that Trump release his tax returns and a full business disclosure about his business ties in other countries, including Russia, but that demand won’t happen either.
Let’s be clear that right now Trump and the Republicans are doing or are attempting to do great damage to our country, and there is no opposition party speaking up against them in forceful, meaningful ways. Establishment Democrats are more worried about purging the party of liberals than fighting for justice and truth. The DNC right now is an ineffective organization destined to lose more elections even if Trump does get removed from office.
Mueller or some other enterprising prosecutor needs to charge Sessions. Is there a Democratic leader willing to stand up and say it? Should we all just sit back and wait for another “lesser of the two evils” election that will ensure GOP if not fascist dominance for years and years to come?
